SAFETY

We back up our safety claims with actual  data/test results, our results are awesome and we are proud of our work.

To our knowledge we are the only equestrian helmet company that publishes their test results/data.  Why do you think other manufacturers would keep their results hidden...? You can answer this one for yourselves!

Notes:

Temperatures: cold = -20deg C or -4 deg F, hot = 50 deg C or 122 F, ambient is room temp.  Headform weight is 4.692 kgs (10.34 lbs) & 4.054kgs.

HPI:  IJ36 and IE36 (yes we also publish these that manufacturers hide!)

PAS 015, European (VG1 & EN1384) and ASTM performs basic testing only and does not test for horse shoe, round object (hemi) object testing.  These additional testing requirements are part of the higher Snell standard only.

SAFETY STANDARDS EXPLAINED

In our quest for safety, we have gone for the highest standard being the latest being the SNELL E2021 safety standard. ARRO helmets is the only helmet that has both the SNELL E2021 Safety standard, plus MIPS. In this article, we look at both SNELL E2021 and MIPS. We believe all riders should be empowered with this knowledge when you shop for your protective equipment.

The SNELL E2021 Safety Standard

This standard offers higher protection for riders. Equestrian helmets are not accessories; they are vital safety gear. Equestrian sports can involve significant risks, including falls and head injuries. A good-quality helmet can mean the difference between a minor accident and a life-threatening injury. That's where the SNELL 2021 safety standard comes into play.

The SNELL Memorial Foundation is a renowned nonprofit organization dedicated to improving helmet safety through research and testing. They regularly update their safety standards to reflect the latest advancements in technology and research findings. The SNELL E2021 safety standard specifically addresses equestrian helmets, aiming to set the bar higher for rider protection.

Key Features of SNELL E2021 for Equestrian Helmets

  1. Impact Testing: SNELL E2021 focuses on impact testing, replicating more real-life scenarios (including round objects) where a rider might fall from a horse. Helmets are subjected to rigorous testing to assess their ability to absorb and dissipate impact energy. This ensures that the helmet can effectively protect the rider's head during a fall.

  2. Helmet Shape and Coverage: The new standard emphasizes that equestrian helmets should provide extended coverage to the rider's head. It sets guidelines for the head coverage of the helmet to ensure that it covers crucial areas, including the back of the head/nape of the neck and temple. This expanded coverage reduces the risk of injury in case of a fall.

  3. Retention System: SNELL E2021 includes a significantly higher requirement for the retention system (chin strap) of the helmet. *Plastic buckles Normally requires steel buckle - a plastic buckle is not strong elimiates 99% of helmets onthe market..

  4. Durability and Materials: SNELL E2021 sets stringent requirements for helmet materials and durability. Helmets must withstand various environmental conditions (- 20 Degrees C to 50 Degrees C) and remain effective throughout their lifespan.

The SNELL E2021 safety standard for equestrian helmets represents a significant leap forward in rider protection. It sets higher requirements for impact resistance, coverage, retention systems, and durability. Investing in an equestrian helmet that meets this standard is not just a smart choice; it's a vital one for anyone engaged in equestrian sports. When it comes to safety, riders should settle for nothing less than the best, and SNELL E2021 helmets offer exactly that - superior protection and peace of mind for equestrians.

MIPS System

We explain how the Multi Directional Impact System (MIPS) works in equestrian helmets to enhance rider safety.

MIPS is a revolutionary safety technology that was originally developed for bicycle helmets and has since been adapted for various sports, including equestrian riding. The primary goal of MIPS is to provide additional protection against rotational forces that can occur during a fall or impact. These rotational forces can lead to traumatic brain injuries or concussions, even if the helmet effectively absorbs the initial impact.

How MIPS Works

  1. The MIPS Liner: The core component of MIPS technology is the inner liner, which sits between the rider's head and the helmet's outer shell. This liner is made of a low-friction material that allows it to move independently of the helmet shell.

  2. Rotational Motion Absorption: During an impact, such as a fall from a horse, there are often forces acting at angles, causing the rider's head to rotate. The MIPS liner is designed to absorb and redirect these rotational forces by allowing a controlled sliding motion between the rider's head and the helmet.

  3. Reduces Brain Shearing: The sliding motion between the liner and the shell helps to reduce the shearing forces that can occur when the head suddenly changes direction. By doing so, MIPS technology can reduce the risk of brain injuries, including concussions, that might otherwise result from these rotational forces.

  4. Enhanced Protection: While traditional helmets aim to absorb linear impacts (direct blows), MIPS-equipped helmets offer enhanced protection by addressing the less predictable, but equally dangerous, rotational impacts that can happen in equestrian accidents.

In the world of equestrian sports, rider safety is of utmost importance. The inclusion of MIPS technology in equestrian helmets has proven to be a advancement in head protection. By addressing rotational forces during impacts, MIPS-equipped helmets provide riders with an added layer of safety, reducing the risk of serious head injuries like concussions. For equestrians, investing in a helmet with MIPS technology is a smart choice that can help ensure a safer riding experience.
